Text:

Talus Field 3, featuring Glenrose Trail and Sullivan Lake and yesterday’s Southeast Fire and the September 2024 Spokane area Dust Storm, with some inspiration from dreaming of living in, becoming engorged, and abandoning Yakima, Washington

But I had crawled over the lip of the rotting container and peered across the lot. I asked the one question that aligned with my hands. There were surface lights staining the lot. Bulbs painted over with red paint, and a small collection of lamps on the ground nearby. In crumpled boxes. A local store discarding its remainders. My lips were chapped, knuckles dry and bleeding. I had to take it all in. As the sound grew, the world became a single pin. A pierce. Nearly virtual.

But still I crawled, hand over hand. My experience. My problem. In the uncanny redness. Application of description. Vanity of lips. Knuckles of hubris. I stepped over the lamps and noticed the bulbs were chipped, like a child’s teeth. A small line of red paint led outward like a snake. A spiral, a form in the rouge haze, a swallow in the dusk. I took my worried skin and proceeded out of the lot toward the dust and the quarry and the looming rocks where I first learned to crawl. Containment behind me, containment ahead.
